EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS - CONSTRUCTION ACADEMY OPEN FOR ENROLLMENT!

Introducing an exciting new opportunity for local middle school students! Balfour Beatty, in joint venture with Holt Brothers, is partnering with Healthcare Foundation of Wilson and the Wilson Family YMCA to create a Construction Academy after school program for middle school students.

The Middle School After School (MSAS) Construction Academy program will consist of an 18-month curriculum for middle school students that will explore the construction industry alongside Balfour Beatty and Holt Brothers team members. Students will have the opportunity to learn from industry-leading experts about careers in construction and career readiness, resume wriging and interview skills, and the importance of teamwork and community engagement. Students will also learn about construction operations, innovation and technology through building their own mock construction projects, flying drones, playing engineering games, participating in virtual and in-person job walks and more.

Wednesday, October 9, 2019: Architects Anne Lebo from Little and Tim Carr from YMCA met with Wilson Middle Schoolers to provide the opportunity to design the new full facility YMCA with a dynamic afterschool space. Darden and Elm City 6th-8th graders learned valuable collaboration skills from the Architects as they worked in teams. We are looking for a wide range of input, especially from parents. We have started the design process with community partners and with Elm City and Darden students. All middle schools and elementary schools will participate in the design process in the near future.
